Clara Sola Leads the Swedish Film Prize Nomination

Set in rural Costa Rica, “Clara Sola” is a film about a 40-year-old virgin whose sexual life changes when an outsider comes into her village. Though the winners will be declared on Jan 24th next year, the film has been nominated for Swedish Film Award, Guldbagge, or Golden Beetle. Being the nation’s top film prize, Guldbage has had some outstanding films in its bag since 1964. 

The film has already been premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight section in Cannes this year. Wendy Chinchilla Araya plays the character of Clara, a titular character raised in a strict religious family. The film has already got 9 Guldbagge nominations including the Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress. It’s a story of every woman who is shackled by societal conventions and wants to be free.

This year has been a rollercoaster ride for every filmmaker but giving entertainment to the audience gives them aesthetic satisfaction. This movie portrays a women’s desire out of every societal dogma. Tagged by The Hollywood Reporter, it’s a coming-of-age tale where a woman wants to break all the conventional dogmas and be free. 

Besides Clara Sola, there are other nominations also such as Ninja Thyberg’s Pleasure where it unfolds the story of a would-be porn star, and Ronnie Sandahl’s Tigers which explores a one-time teen soccer superstar’s depressive life. On the other hand, there are Erik Poppe’s historical drama, The Emigrants, and the documentary The Most Beautiful Boy in the World. 

After making Clara Sola, Nathalie Alvarez Mesen is on another project named The Wolf Will Tear Your Immaculate Hands. A newbie filmmaker, Nathalie Alvarez Mesen has directed the film. It’s her first feature film funded by Hubert Bals and The World Cinema.

In addition to this, there is an international film category also. You will find the Academy Award winners “Nomadland” and “Fathers” in that list. Both compete against the Danish animated documentary “Flee” directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen. The latter has been nominated for the Best International Feature in the Academy Award 2022.
